Care of Mouth Following Extraction

  • Closely watch your child until the anesthesia wears off. Local anesthesia may last as long as 3 HOURS. Do not allow your child to bite, suck, or rub the lips, face or tongue while they feel numb.
  • Avoid sucking through a straw, spitting and carbonated beverages for 48 hours.
  • Bleeding can be controlled following an extraction by maintaining firm pressure with gauze over the extraction site for 20 minutes following extractions. Please have your child bite down, not chew on gauze.
  • Pain will be prevented by taking Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) not Tylenol every 6 hours as needed.
  • Cool, soft foods are recommended at first following extractions.
  • Your child should avoid excessive physical exertion for 24 hours.
